Yes, I See You Right There. Thank You Oh So Very Much.

As you all probably noticed, I have been incognito from the blogosphere for the past couple of weeks. I sorely apologize for that. Sophomore year came along with the requisite overcommitments, jobs, friends, and let's not forget: schoolwork.
Yet I have felt a little bit melancholy not to have posted for so long, and I hope all of you lovely, lovely readers accept this apology from a college student.

Whenever I see someone giving me the eye, I always make sure and act extra polite/sweet/nice towards them.
You might know what I'm speaking about. It's that thing, the unconscious happening that goes on sometimes when you suddenly see someone who fits your idea of a stereotypical-this or stereotypical-that.
In my case, as evidence while I walked about in the airport today, the stereotype is suspiciously oppressed Muslim woman. I always feel uncomfortable when I sense someone is doing the ole one-up, one-down look, but I have on my smiley face: Why let it ruin your day, righhttt?
And then by the third instance, I'm simply frustrated. Aggravated. Distraught.
I love attention, peoples, but can it please be some positive glitter? Please? With sprinkles on the top?
In deference to my sweet friend Banana's post, I'm not going to go into stereotypes. If you missed out on that gem of a post, simply click here.
But in the meantime, I just want to expand a bit on the eyes thing.
Go into it. A rant, I suppose.

I pride myself on being a polite person, thank you very much to the conscientious efforts of my dear parents. Don't stare, don't whisper, don't point with your fingers.
Good God, I have seen the strangest looking/behaving people, and I still abide by the rule of only looking for a second, then it's just straight ahead all the way.
So it surprises me when I see people I would otherwise (yes, stereotypically, I didn't say I was flawless) categorize as the cultured type begin staring when I walk into the room.

[staring. cats. what more can you ask for? img cred]

And it isn't as though I have huge, curly red painted nails and flippered feet. (Let's not forget that dragon's tail)
I simply don a headscarf and modest--but fashionable--clothes.

As a heads up for any confused people out theere (don't be afraid to admit it! it's alright), when I say "modest", I mean "long-sleeved-shirts-under-minimally-knee-length-dresses/skirts/tops,-long-pants/jeans".

So please. It's not as though I'm sporting wings.

Oh, and I'm also going to answer a question I think most everyone has brooded over (even me!): Do I get hot in the long-sleeved stuff during the summer?

Sure, I am warm, but then again, isn't everyone else? And honestly, do you see the bedouins (nomads) in the desert walking around wearing short shorts and tank-tops in the stifling desert heat?

[bedouins! img cred]

No, of course not. And the fact is, that is wholly unrelated to religious reasons.
Because it's a scientifically proven fact that the less access UV-rays are given to your bare skin, the cooler you'll be.

So please, please, please. I know it might be THIS hard not to stare at a strange/different person, but come on! Restrain yourself.

It honestly isn't that hard if you put that head to it. :) Have you ever experienced this happening to you? Or to someone close to you? How do you feel about it?

Until next time, remember to stop and take in the air!

Haha I grew up with red hair, blending in was never an option for me either.
That sucks for you though! It's not as if people have never seen a muslim girl before, and a headscarf shouldn't really be such a big deal.

I'm glad you've updated! Yay :) But don't worry, it seems like you're very busy!

But gosh, I hate those kind of people that just flat out stare at you and give you dirty looks, so I can't even imagine how frustrating it must be. It's not like no one's ever seen anyone in a headscarf and everything before, so what's the point? If anyone stares at my friend because of her blue hair, she just shouts at them "TAKE A PICTURE, IT LASTS LONGER!" Maybe not the best approach hahaha, but it does get them to look away all embarrassed ;)

The idea of ppl staring sometimes influences me to dress differently. I have a lot of african/islamic clothes that I absolutely love, but I get sick of ppl staring and asking me where I'm from.

I'm from a small town in the Midwest and my family has been there for 5 generations.
Drives me nuts!

I think it's the head scarf that makes people stare.
Doesn't make it right though. I never stare. I smile and keep walking.
Honestly, I walk around in giant costumes quite a few days out of the year. Giant fairy walking through Albertsons should be more of a spectacle than someone in a headscarf.
Here in Vegas though... nothing's weird.

Yay, you're back! *happy dance commences*

Why would anyone stare at a head-scarf and modest clothing? It sounds perfectly normal. Just because you stay covered up doesn't mean anything. It's autumn, no reason to bare a whole lot of skin anyway! Don't let them get you down!

I try really hard not to stare! but sometimes its hard I'll admit! I hate it when people stare at me. Sometimes I very rudely stare back... Yeah, I'm not the nicest girl on the block...

And I agree you shouldn't let people staring get you down! It is important to live according to your morals. :) glad your back~

One time a man ran a stop sign because he was too busy staring at me and my sister and had to slam the breaks.

Our reaction? We laughed. :)

(We wear headscarves too, btw)

I never understand the stare; what do these people think is going to happen next? You're either going to freak someone out, be met with a "what are you looking at, buddy?" or at the very least, make someone feel uncomfortable.

I hope all is well, it's been a wee while since you've been on.

Good day, sun shines!
There have been times of hardship when I felt unhappy missing knowledge about opportunities of getting high yields on investments. I was a dump and downright pessimistic person.
I have never imagined that there weren't any need in large initial investment.
Now, I'm happy and lucky , I started to get real income.
It's all about how to select a proper partner who uses your funds in a right way - that is incorporate it in real deals, parts and divides the income with me.

You may ask, if there are such firms? I have to answer the truth, YES, there are. Please get to know about one of them:

Yup-per-dee-doodle - it seems the same thing happens world-over.

I was in Australia on holiday (wearing a headscarf), and the unfortunate last one on the plane. Around 80% of the people on the plane just stopped what they were doing and stared at me. Sooo, I sweetly smiled at everyone, eventually found my seat, then quickly asked my confused mom, "What's wrong with my face?"

(It had never happened to me before)

Lol, my fave part was this: "And it isn't as though I have huge, curly red painted nails and flippered feet. (Let's not forget that dragon's tail)"

Waiting for your next post!

haha everytime i am on a business trip outside the UAE, i always get the stares at the airport... in the plane... somehow i always end up being the only hijabi i can see in the meeting/training, airport, hotel, plane, restaurant...! i mean i know there are so many of them in the West but where do they all dissappear when i'm around.

I don't let the stare get to me tho. I mean i'd look up and stare if someone half naked walked past by me where as others wouldnt even bother. Its about what we are used to seeing, as u said. And covered heads are so sensataionlized in the media. I guess people are just curious seeing a hijabi walking around alone with a laptop hanging on her shoulder dressed is "modest" western attire hehehe. I'm pretty sure they would love to strike a conversation with me! I usually tend to start the conversation first and it always ends up being a very normal one. Children then to be scared tho, not surprised, when i was a child, "Western" people scared me. They were aliens. Even if they spoke to me in normal English it would sound like some alien was talking to me saying they are about to eat me up. hehe such is childhood paranoia of the uncommon.

It's all good tho, everytime ppl stop and stare at you, they do think "Islam" and it does arouse enough curiosity in them i am sure to want to have a conversation with someone about it... prolyl go to the pub and tell their friends hehe but im sure they talk.
